<p>&#8220;How to&#8230;&#8221; are two words that end up in search engines quite  frequently. The Internet is 100 percent information transmission —  someone has something to share, and others have things they want to  gain. The how-to phenomenon exemplifies this dynamic like few other  events can. People no longer have to go out to the store to get a book  on car maintenance or pot roast recipes — they just hop online and grab  the information for free.</p>
<p>Ah, but that&#8217;s not to say there&#8217;s no money in how-tos. How-to celebs  like Kimberly Clayton Blaine and Michelle Phan have made substantial  headway in the world of how-to videos, with their once quiet video sites  gaining major cooperation from organizations like Lancôme and Yahoo! as  a result of their rapidly-growing popularity.</p>
<p>But what exactly makes a good, solid how-to video? What parts need to be  included in a proper series in order to encourage people to keep coming  back for view after view?</p>
<p><strong>Part 1: Choose a Topic People Care About</strong></p>
<p>It might seem like a given, but a lot of marketers seem to forget that  people have emotions and minds of their own, and they can tell when  someone isn&#8217;t giving their all. Someone who is obviously &#8220;phoning in&#8221; a  performance is likely to get dismissed out of hand compared to someone  who obviously is knowledgeable and passionate about their chosen topic.</p>
<p>There are a lot of ways for a presenter to show they care about a topic.  Great how-to artists — and when done well, it truly is an art — like to  diverge from the main discussion to give a very short aside, such as a  recipe specialist sharing an anecdote about mixing up salt and sugar in  an icing recipe. Others might offer tips about how to circumvent  official channels for acquiring supplies and share knowledge about  secondary, less expensive sources. In short, the great ones don&#8217;t just  share the hard details, they also behind-the-scenes information to help  spark their audience&#8217;s interest.</p>
<p><strong>Part 2: Ensure Purity of Purpose</strong></p>
<p>That said, small asides that showcase personal interest in the topic are  good, but the stress must be on &#8220;small&#8221; or short. The average attention  span of most web users is not terrifically long — there&#8217;s so much to  see, do and learn, so a how-to video must capture interest and hold it  without fail for the duration. Thus, make sure that every element  included in the video is absolutely necessary to the message being  conveyed and/or to capturing the audience&#8217;s hearts and minds.</p>
<p>If a small aside illustrates a more personal interest and helps the  viewer connect, great — keep that in. If, on the other hand, it&#8217;s just  kind of funny, nix it. Focus on the details and make sure that  everything in the video is bent to the task of fulfilling the how-to  process. Always remember that the viewer is present for a reason: to  learn what information is available.</p>
<p><strong>Part 3: Allow for Style</strong></p>
<p>Each person has his or her own style, without question. Style is a  complicated thing: It&#8217;s composed of accent, pattern of speaking,  physical mannerisms, personal attire and more. Does the presenter  actually show up in the video, or does the video conceal his or her  face? Is the video shot in real time, edited for sectional content or  does it use a stop-motion process so that the presenter is never visible  throughout?</p>
<p>No one style is appropriate to every venue, and styles can be stretched  to odd degrees. One might find it odd to adopt an exceptionally formal  tone when presenting a how-to on baked beans and cornbread. On the other  hand, this kind of style might be exaggerated for comedic effect, and  this human element of irony might keep the viewers coming back. In  short, don&#8217;t be afraid to experiment with a few different styles,  possibly under alternative accounts, until finding one that works.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4: Take the Time Needed; No More and No Less</strong></p>
<p>YouTube is a popular venue for video how-tos, for obvious reasons. The  default length for most videos is 10 minutes, which provides a  reasonable benchmark for simpler how-to guides. It also has become a  benchmark for video tolerance in general simply because of the sheer  number of users growing accustomed to videos based around this length.  That said, YouTube recently increased its maximum video length to 15  minutes, so be sure to keep an eye on viewers&#8217; habits.</p>
<p>Indeed, the issue of time can be a bit tricky for a how-to. Ideally,  unless the procedure is a particularly long one, the how-to should be  kept to a single video. This may mean taking multiple shoots to see how  various treatment lengths work for the project. On the other hand, don&#8217;t  be afraid to let the video expand to several &#8220;episodes&#8221; if the how-to  in question is large enough. Something as complicated and involved as  building a backyard deck can reasonably be expected to require several  videos to encompass.</p>
<p><strong>Step 5: Cross Promote</strong></p>
<p>The currency of the web is reputation. If people think poorly of a site,  it gets poor views. Having a good attitude and a cooperative spirit is  often the best way to get a good promotion off the ground, and this  includes how-to videos.</p>
<p>For example, a site might consider promoting a fellow though  unaffiliated how-to expert if their videos cover a gap in the site&#8217;s own  knowledge. A cooking site whose patrons ask about a type of cooking  none of the site&#8217;s staff specialize in could refer them to a colleague  who just happens to know what he&#8217;s talking about. Additionally, one  might promote webzines and non-how-to sites that cover similar topics.</p>

<p>Getting started with <strong>article marketing</strong> is easy to do and can pay huge dividends. Many individuals use article marketing to improve search engine rankings, to inform, or to pitch products and services they sell. Regardless of your purpose, consider using article marketing as a great way to build a loyal following.</p>
<p>The proliferation of information online has brought with it varying degrees of content. Some content is valid, other content is purely fictional. When you write, be sure to provide references, examples, or quote data from other sources. This helps to build credibility and informs your audience that your content can be trusted. For your article marketing to be effective, follow these guidelines:</p>
<p>Research your niche. Before you begin any writing whatsoever, start by finding a niche that is popular and that you feel you can write about. It should be something you enjoy. If you are not interested in a particular area, it will be difficult to enjoy the process of writing articles.</p>
<p>Create a plan. Are you going to write one article per week or one each day? Think about how much time and energy you want to put into your article writing and for what purpose. If you simply want to write and publish your work, you may only want to do a little bit each day. Once you have a complete work, then you would submit to websites or blogs. On the other hand, if you are looking for improved rankings or sales from your article marketing, your publishing schedule may need to be more aggressive.</p>
<p>Write your article. Write and article on your subject that includes the specific keywords you seek to optimize for. Your article should be between four to seven hundred words. It all depends on the intent and purpose of the article. After you write your article make sure you proof it for spelling and grammatical errors.</p>
<p>Submit your article to article directories. This is a great way to get your information published quickly and easily. Register with an article directory like Ezinearticles or GoArticles. By doing so, you will have a place to submit your articles and build an author profile. Webmasters use these article directories to find content for their website. Additionally, article directories give you added exposure in a given topic area.</p>
<p>Article marketing has many benefits. The most important aspect of article marketing, in my opinion is to clearly understand what you want to use it for, building a plan, and consistently creating and distributing content. This is essential for long term success.</p>

<div>One of the easiest and most cost efficient, long term tactics for driving high quality leads to your website is through article marketing. Not only is it very effective in promoting your site, products or service to a huge targeted audience, but it is free and easy to do.You don&#8217;t have to be an English major to write articles. It doesn&#8217;t matter if you don&#8217;t like writing or don&#8217;t think you are any good at it.</p>
<p>You can very easily research and get the information you need from the internet, magazines, books or re-write one of your articles by changing and re-writing the same article and switching around sections of the article. You then have turned an old article into a new article with new content that can be submitted to the article directories.</p>
<p>There are hundreds of article directories that you can submit your articles to for article marketing. If you are tight on money, you can submit your articles by hand. If money is not a concern, you can inexpensively submit your articles to directory that will send your article out to a couple of hundred or more other directories. Now you can start to see the power of having all of your articles floating around in cyberspace, possibly for years to come, for anyone to read.</p>
<p>This gives you instant exposure for your site. There are literally thousands of people who are searching for the information that your article is about. Here are three steps to help you drive quality traffic to your site using article marketing:</p>
<p>1. Before you submit your article to an article directory, fill out the resource box with your name and website. I like to install anchor text that will direct you to my site, as well as at the very bottom of the resource box I put my website link. This link is not anchor text, because I want people to see my website name.</p>
<p>This also gives you chance to show that you are an expert in your field. The best way to do this is to put in the third person, so you don&#8217;t sound like you are bragging. Make it sound like someone is introducing you to someone at a board meeting.</p>
<p>One of the nice things about article marketing is that you don&#8217;t really even need your own website. You can simply use affiliate programs and products to write reviews about them and then link to the product sales page from your article.</p>
<p>2. Give good quality content. Do not do any selling in your article. That is the purpose of the resource box, leave all salesmanship there. If you make your articles informative and interesting, people will want to click on your resource box to get more information. Be totally honest about what you are writing about and readers will be more likely to see you as a dependable resource for information. Give people real value in your articles and you will more likely be rewarded with trust and sales of your product or service.</p>
<p>3. If you really don&#8217;t like to write your own articles or you don&#8217;t have time to write, you can freelance to someone else to do your article writing. Just google freelance writers and you will find many writers who would be more than happy to write for you. The nice thing is it really does not cost much at all to have done.</p>
<p>Article marketing is not going to make you an internet marketing millionaire overnight, but it gives you the opportunity to start small and then build your way up &#8211; especially if you&#8217;re on a tight budget. <p>The main reason to market your articles is to build in-bound links people can click to visit your site. When you submit an article to a directory, a link to your site will be included in the resource box to take people to your site to learn more about what you do and, more importantly, what you will be able to offer them.</p>
<p>To effectively market an article, make certain you start with a great headline. Your headline should offer a compelling reason to read the rest of the article. Explain the purpose of the article in the first paragraph. This is how you grab them and make them want to read the rest of your article. Don*t get to wordy and use a lot of terminology that will make the reader confused and ultimately frustrated. You don*t want them to stop reading!</p>
<p>The formatting of the article also has some effect on whether the reader will react positively and would like to know more. Be sure you use bold lettering, subheadings and perhaps a bullet list to get your point across. Marketing studies have shown, if the copy is attractive and jumps out, the reader will most likely read the entire article.</p>
<p>Providing examples of how your product will benefit your customer is the best way to get them to want to visit your site. Being too preachy or having too much of an infomercial feel, by pushing how they *need* to buy your product or use your service can drive people away. Keep it simple and clear and you will have a customer for life.</p>
<p>Here is one approach that I use that has never failed. Although I use this as my primary marketing technique, it is only one approach to consider. Get your feet on the ground, try some free articles in a few popular directories and you will be on your way to driving the targeted traffic you need before you know it.</p>
<p>Free Articles!, it sounds odd that writing an article for free will help you to build traffic, but it is one of the BEST strategies to use right now. The reason for this is: people are hungry for new and original content. There are many different article directories that rely on outside authors to stock their article directories. If no one submits a new article, the existing articles become stale and they lose their readership. Additionally, many articles are written with keyword phrases that generate income for the host site as well as drive traffic to the articles<br />
and back to your site via the resource box. So, the more articles directories accept, the more content thus the more money they make. They also attract more people and you get more traffic when people read your articles then follow the link in your resource box back to your websites.</p>
<p>While this is the best strategy to use, it can require someone who understands SEO and has a talent and flair for writing. If that&#8217;s not you, do not fake it! I can not emphasize this enough. You will only create a bad business image if you manage to publish poor quality content, especially if it appears on multiple sites. So, hire someone to do the writing for you if you don&#8217;t have a flair for words. It will pay you back in the long-run.</p>
<p>You will want to focus on articles that are relevant to your market niche so that by the time someone gets to the author resource box, you know you have a potential buyer. Otherwise, they won&#8217;t bother to read the article, right?</p>
<p>Each host site may have different rules for the resource box. Some don&#8217;t allow you to link to sales pages, but will allow you to link to a blog or website, as long as it is not an obvious promotional page. Be sure to read the rules and follow them. This is one reason why maintaining a blog is a great idea when you need such an intermediary space to drive traffic then pool it from there to your other websites and offers.</p>

<p>An ezine is a magazine sent via email&#8230;simple as that. All the rules that apply to printed magazines apply here too, but in an electronic format. Businesses are scrambling to build email lists and start their own customer ezines. And why not?</p>
<p>The average ezine response rate is 5% &#8211; 15% That is huge! Especially when you consider that the average response rate for average direct mail pieces is somewhere between 3% and 5%.</p>

<p>Telemarketing</p>
<p>Although it is often maligned and frequently misunderstood, telemarketing is one of the fastest growing forms of direct marketing today. It provides an opportunity to make one-to-one contact with the prospective buyer at a very low cost.</p>

<p>Compared with television advertising, radio advertising is much less expensive. Radio also allows you to use your advertising dollars in a mass communication format, but to a targeted type of demographic.</p>
<p>Radio ads need to create interest, build desire, and cause action. So, the top 5 copywriting elements should be included in radio advertising:</p>
<p>1. Use the same headlines as your newspaper ads or as your direct mail letters to create the interest in a radio spot</p>
<p>2. The first two or three sentences should capture the listeners attention</p>
<p>3. The body of the radio ad works the same way as a print ad it fulfils your promise in the headline</p>
<p>4. Direct the listener as to what action to take</p>
<p>5. Have a measurable response to your ad</p>

Each is effective, and often, submission to article directories is free – that&#8217;s right, free marketing for your business, all it takes is a little bit of time.<br />

<p>It&#8217;s a common statement when it comes to Internet marketing: content is king. A blog – short for a weblog – allows you to create fresh content at regular intervals, driving traffic and search engines to your website.</p>

Unlike article marketing and press release distribution, however, a blog allows you to begin to carry on a dialog with your current and prospective customers.</p>

<p>As a small business owner building and promoting your business on the web, having quality inbound links is important. Links allow your site to be found by those who visit similar sites looking for the products and services that your company offers.</p>
<p>Links – like those at the end of your articles and press releases, like those that link back to individual products or services from within your blog, and like those from others who have purchased from you in the past – help to improve your site&#8217;s search engine rank.</p>
<p>By submitting your business&#8217; website to relevant directories and even to industry-specific – niche – search engines, you&#8217;ll begin to generate additional links. More importantly, however, these niche directories are increasingly used by those looking for very specific sites. Having your listing present will make it even more likely that your prospective customers will find your page; that makes them a particularly valuable marketing tool for your business, and, again, it&#8217;s often free to submit your site.</p>

5. Look for Joint Ventures with Other Like-Minded Business   People</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not uncommon for small businesses to work together – a movie theater and a restaurant offering coupons for a discount if you spend the evening at both places. In my past life working with large corporations I realized that the largest companies grow by means of joint ventures all the time. However, many small businesses do not look into joint ventures when it comes to marketing their businesses.</p>
<p>Is it always easy to find the right joint venture for marketing your business? No, of course not. But it is possible to find like-minded business owners whose customers could benefit from your products or services just as your customers could benefit from those that they offer.</p>
<p>As a result, both small businesses will be better able to extend their outreach and develop a wider customer base. If you are going to enter into a joint venture, search for companies with similar goals and a similar customer base but a different type of product or service. Stay on the lookout, keep an open mind and you just might find the perfect opportunity to market your business to a new audience.</p>
<p>A perfect example of this principle is a recent joint venture I did with a company who specializes in teaching business credit skills to small business owners. This company markets to the same clients that I wish to add to my customer list, but they offer a completely different service. By working together, we were able to market our services to each other&#8217;s mailing lists, resulting in both of us attracting new customers we would not have had otherwise. The great part about this joint venture was that there was no out-of-pocket cost to either of us – just our time and a little creativity in coming up with suitable promotions to each other&#8217;s lists!</p>
<p>Taking your business to the web does not need to be difficult, nor does it need to be expensive. By taking a creative approach, small business owners on a tight marketing budget will be able to find traffic and increase their customer base.</p>
<p>Focus on reaching the search engines: use the right keywords and use them appropriately. Let people know that you have the information they need with articles and be sure to get the word out by distributing press releases. Interact with your customers with a high quality blog, and focus on getting great links. Lastly, take advantage of partnerships with like-minded business owners.</p>
<p>Marketing your small business website may require a lot of hard work, but it doesn&#8217;t require a lot of money – oftentimes, the best results are derived from the most creative (not the most expensive) solutions.</p>

<p>Without traffic, you won&#8217;t have any sales from your site, unless you have a good list of opt-ins, but you don&#8217;t want to rely on only existing customers, always keep your list growing.</p>
<p>Traffic alone won&#8217;t make the sale, you have to learn how to convert the traffic into cash. You should put as much or more time into learning and testing your ad copy so that the traffic you generate isn&#8217;t just window shoppers, the right ad copy can turn window shoppers into buyers, that&#8217;s the main goal, right?</p>
<p>So what are some ways if you are low on funds to get traffic coming to your site, I&#8217;m glad you asked.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re just starting out, you have no list, but you have a site and a product, or maybe you&#8217;re just an affiliate and have other people products on your site, here is how you can get free traffic.</p>
<p>#1 Blogging</p>
<p>The only thing you&#8217;ve heard about blogging is that its where people meet that have nothing better to do, and you&#8217;re not the sociable type, you don&#8217;t need to be. People meet there and discuss problems they have with several issues, some of which you may have answers to.</p>
<p>If you can be a provider of answers, you can be the Pied Piper to them, and they will follow. Of course, you&#8217;re there on business, and you have a goal, traffic.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t visit these with the blatant objective of &#8220;follow me to my site and buy stuff&#8221;, they will smell you a mile away. Rather do your research, and make these places you pick, your &#8220;therapy&#8221; time, getting away from give me, give me, give me mentality, and be a giver of knowledge. Remember a biblical passage says &#8220;Give, and it shall be given unto you&#8221;.</p>
<p>#2 Search Engines</p>
<p>Study what keyword terms best fit what you&#8217;re selling, find out if that phrase is used much, and if it is, build your pages on that theme. There&#8217;s more to a page than just the copy, there&#8217;s many to consider, the search engines do, you should also.</p>
<p>When you do a search on them, you will find the first line of each site listed will capture your eye, or let it slide on by. How do you want possible traffic to view yours.</p>
<p>The bold first line of each entry you see comes from the title on your HTML page, not the title of your content. If you want to attract attention before they even come to your page, you have to include your keyword phrase as well as an eye-catching headline phrase. This will also be graded by the search engines, and help you rank higher than if you forget and it just says &#8220;Untitled&#8221;, that&#8217;s a real show stopper.</p>
<p>#3 Write some articles</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another opportunity for you to give. Done the right way, you will have others use your article on their site, and along with your little blurb at the bottom, or some cleverly placed text within the content (if the user forgets to copy your signature from the bottom) you&#8217;ll get readers to click on the link, or type in your URL and visit your site. Placing your ideas on the internet at article submission sites, gives others the opportunity to use your content for their sites, and it can spread too many places, giving you places on the internet you would never have visited to tell others about yourself.</p>
<p>#4 Social Bookmarking</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to be an eloquent speaker to be a welcomed visitor to these types of sites, all you need is some friendly input and not be afraid of saying hello to strangers. Don&#8217;t however, put personal information on these sites that could lead to something dangerous like identity theft, but listing who your favorite band is, your favorite song, your hobbies, things like this will attract others of common interest, and not forgetting why you&#8217;re there by placing links to your web site in strategic places will bring some more free traffic.</p>
<p>#5 Link Trading with other sites</p>
<p>Sometimes frowned upon if done solely for the purpose of traffic, this method can bring high quality visitors if done the right way. Let&#8217;s say you have a site that sells dog leashes. You need to ask yourself, who might need dog leashes. Well, how about dog owners, and where do dog owners also visit on the internet. How about dog training sites, or dog groomers, or animal shelters, or veterinarians&#8230; Think of the whole picture, from every angle.</p>
<p>Contacting these sites by email or phone, you can suggest that you both can benefit by providing a link to each other that would benefit each other&#8217;s visitors, without being in competition with each other. <p>I recently heard about a guy named Adam Short from a podcast on Yaro Starak&#8217;s Entrepreneur&#8217;s Journey <a href="http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com"  target="_blank">blog</a>. He runs over 90 websites selling ebooks in very specific niches.</p>

<p>If you take a look at the website, it isn&#8217;t selling anything. It is only giving away his <strong>Free &#8220;Betta Fish Secrets&#8221; Email Course</strong>! If you look at the signup form, he asks for your Betta fish&#8217;s name:</p>

<p>He uses <a href="http://localmarketingideas.com/likes/aweber.html"  target="_blank">Aweber</a> for his mailing list, so he can set up a sequence of follow-up emails. Once you sign up, you&#8217;re sent a series of emails with helpful Betta Fish Tips. They are not hard sell, but include helpful hints, and a link to a page where he will reveal his entire Betta Care System for you. He lets the autoresponder do all of the heavy lifting.</p>
<p>Sign up for his Betta Fish Secrets Course. Take a look at how he weaves helpful information in with subtle sales messages. Think about how you could use this same model to get your customers buying more<strong> and</strong> more often from you!</p>
<p>Adam gets his traffic using article marketing, and lets the autoresponder do the selling. Totally hand-off. Adam and his partner Alen have developed a course teaching people how to do what they do called <a href="https://imi.infusionsoft.com/go/1/clickque/"  target="_blank">Niche Profit Classroom</a>. I joined last week, and I&#8217;m totally floored. It&#8217;s got tons of video lessons teaching you exactly how they do it all. I&#8217;m only part way through the training, and I&#8217;m impressed.</p>
