5 Proven No-Cost Traffic Generators

By William Wellsworth

Without traffic, you won’t have any sales from your site, unless you have a good list of opt-ins, but you don’t want to rely on only existing customers, always keep your list growing.

Traffic alone won’t make the sale, you have to learn how to convert the traffic into cash. You should put as much or more time into learning and testing your ad copy so that the traffic you generate isn’t just window shoppers, the right ad copy can turn window shoppers into buyers, that’s the main goal, right?

So what are some ways if you are low on funds to get traffic coming to your site, I’m glad you asked.

Let’s say you’re just starting out, you have no list, but you have a site and a product, or maybe you’re just an affiliate and have other people products on your site, here is how you can get free traffic.

#1 Blogging

The only thing you’ve heard about blogging is that its where people meet that have nothing better to do, and you’re not the sociable type, you don’t need to be. People meet there and discuss problems they have with several issues, some of which you may have answers to.

If you can be a provider of answers, you can be the Pied Piper to them, and they will follow. Of course, you’re there on business, and you have a goal, traffic.

Don’t visit these with the blatant objective of “follow me to my site and buy stuff”, they will smell you a mile away. Rather do your research, and make these places you pick, your “therapy” time, getting away from give me, give me, give me mentality, and be a giver of knowledge. Remember a biblical passage says “Give, and it shall be given unto you”.

#2 Search Engines

Study what keyword terms best fit what you’re selling, find out if that phrase is used much, and if it is, build your pages on that theme. There’s more to a page than just the copy, there’s many to consider, the search engines do, you should also.

When you do a search on them, you will find the first line of each site listed will capture your eye, or let it slide on by. How do you want possible traffic to view yours.

The bold first line of each entry you see comes from the title on your HTML page, not the title of your content. If you want to attract attention before they even come to your page, you have to include your keyword phrase as well as an eye-catching headline phrase. This will also be graded by the search engines, and help you rank higher than if you forget and it just says “Untitled”, that’s a real show stopper.

#3 Write some articles

Here’s another opportunity for you to give. Done the right way, you will have others use your article on their site, and along with your little blurb at the bottom, or some cleverly placed text within the content (if the user forgets to copy your signature from the bottom) you’ll get readers to click on the link, or type in your URL and visit your site. Placing your ideas on the internet at article submission sites, gives others the opportunity to use your content for their sites, and it can spread too many places, giving you places on the internet you would never have visited to tell others about yourself.

#4 Social Bookmarking

You don’t have to be an eloquent speaker to be a welcomed visitor to these types of sites, all you need is some friendly input and not be afraid of saying hello to strangers. Don’t however, put personal information on these sites that could lead to something dangerous like identity theft, but listing who your favorite band is, your favorite song, your hobbies, things like this will attract others of common interest, and not forgetting why you’re there by placing links to your web site in strategic places will bring some more free traffic.

#5 Link Trading with other sites

Sometimes frowned upon if done solely for the purpose of traffic, this method can bring high quality visitors if done the right way. Let’s say you have a site that sells dog leashes. You need to ask yourself, who might need dog leashes. Well, how about dog owners, and where do dog owners also visit on the internet. How about dog training sites, or dog groomers, or animal shelters, or veterinarians… Think of the whole picture, from every angle.

Contacting these sites by email or phone, you can suggest that you both can benefit by providing a link to each other that would benefit each other’s visitors, without being in competition with each other. That’s the secret of successful linking, being a benefit to the visitor and your link partner, and not in competition.

Local Coupon Distribution Using Twitter and Blogger

This post is an expansion of the local coupon angle from Erik Qualman’s article, 10 Ways Twitter Can Make Money.

How to distribute your coupons in four easy steps:

  1. Set up a blogger blog where you will post coupon/sales/specials
  2. Get a new Twitter account
  3. Auto-Update your Twitter account using Twitterfeed
  4. Tell your customers to follow you on Twitter

Set Up A Blogger Blog

If are you already subscribed to a google service (like Gmail), you can log in, and start a new blogger blog.

Here are some ideas for a blog name:

You will be using the blog to post your sales and special announcements. Plus Blogger has a special feature that allows you to post to your blog via email and it will post immediately (Blogger Tutorial).

The blog doesn’t have to be pretty, but you can modify it quite easily to resemble your current website or logo.

Get a New Twitter Account

Now that you have your blog set up, you need to get a new Twitter account with the same (or similar) username as your new blog. This should be a separate Twitter account if you already have one.

Twitter requires you to sign up for additional Twitter accounts using a different email address. It is up to you, but I would suggest getting another Gmail account to make things easier. Here is a video tutorial about setting up a Gmail account.

To see instructions about setting up a twitter account or if you just need to refresh your memory, go to, and click the red “Watch a video!” button on Twitter’s homepage.

Auto-Update your Twitter account using Twitterfeed

First you have to set up a Twitterfeed account. Twitterfeed can also use your Google/Gmail account information to log you in.

Next, you’ll need to take your Blogger blog RSS feed and add it to Twitterfeed. This will automatically update your Twitter account with the specials you post on your Blogger blog. Twitter will display the “Title” of your post and a link to your blog, so your customer can view the offer in more detail.

Tip: If you have created a coupon for your offer (gif, jpg or png format), include it in your post and they can print it from your blog page to bring into your store.

Tell Your Customers to Follow You On Your New Twitter Account

Just let your customers know that they can get sale offers and specials announcements by following your special Twitter account. You can make them feel special by telling them it is for VIP customers only.

Or you could let all of your customers know about it by printing it on the bottom of your print (offline) coupons. Something like: “Come join the Twitter Savers Club”. Create a flyer telling them about your new Twitter account. Leave a stack of the flyers on your counter. Add one to their bag, or hand them one with their receipt.

One huge advantage to using Twitter for this technique is that your sale message cannot be blocked by a spam filter. Twitter users “twitter” several times a day and will be looking forward to your message, so they can pass it on to their “followers”.

Finally, a great way to get the word out is to go to TwitterLocal, Twellow, or TwitDir to find local people in your area, by searching for your town name and nearby ones too. Follow everyone you find locally and they may follow you back and your Followers will grow as they let other people know about your specials.
