<p>Emailing your past customers and potential clients is a very  important tool you can use to bring in more people to your physical  business. Your emails can also keep your company name front and center  so people don&#8217;t forget about you and what you offer.</p>
<p>But with the number of emails people get these days and knowing they  don&#8217;t read half of what lands in their in-bins, it becomes more  important than ever for your emails to stand out.</p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean using spammy subject lines or misleading titles to  lure people in. It means using subject lines that have certain trigger  words in them. This is crucial because if they don&#8217;t even open your  email, there&#8217;s zero chance they&#8217;ll act on what&#8217;s inside.</p>
<p>The emails need to be formatted in such a way as to make them easier  and quicker to read. There are simple things you can do to make the  layout of your emails more inviting to read.</p>
<p>Did you know there are certain words you should not use in your  emails or it will cause them to land in your subscribers&#8217; spam folders?   It&#8217;s pretty easy to avoid these words if you know what they are.</p>
<p>Your emails must have a purpose. Before you send one, make sure it  has a call to action.  This can be anything such as purchasing during  your sale, contacting you for more info, visiting your website to do  xyz, or coming in to your store in person for the abc event.</p>
<p>Writing emails is not that hard but crafting them so they stand out  and get opened because the subscriber likes your emails is something  else.</p>

<p>1. Get permission from your customers:<br />
Getting permission  from your recipients is crucial for the success of an email marketing  campaign. This is not just because you may end up with CAN-SPAM  penalties but also because people don&#8217;t like getting emails from unknown  people. What would you do if you get a newsletter from an unknown  person or company? There is a good chance that you may end up in spam  box or trash.</p>
<p>Getting permission is necessary because if somebody  opt in for an email about a product it is because he has plans to buy  it, may not be now but in future whereas a random person may not be even  interested in that product. By emailing the opted in person you are  encouraging him to buy your product which will end up in sales whereas  in the latter case the person is not even interested in it, so mailing  him will only waste your time and resources.</p>
<p>2. Give valuable information:<br />
Your  email need not be focused only on sales. It is annoying to always  receive sales emails. Why not give them some useful information about  your product or service? It will keep them interested in your emails.  This doesn&#8217;t mean that you shouldn&#8217;t send sales letters but don&#8217;t do  that every time. If you can establish a good relation with the customer  not just as a sales person but also as someone they can trust when  choosing a product or service they will come back to you for buying  more.</p>
<p>3. Make your email design simple:<br />
There is nothing more  annoying than an unreadable email. Use a simple email template for your  newsletters. Minimize the use of videos and graphics as nowadays they  are most likely to get stuck in email filters. Send them plane, well  arranged text messages with necessary links to your landing pages. You  can add your videos and graphics in your landing pages t interact with  your readers.</p>
<p>4. Use important links more than once:<br />
If you  have an important link in your news letter which leads to the sales page  or such an important page don&#8217;t hesitate to use it more than once  depending on the length of the message. By doing so the chances that a  reader click on the link and visit your page increases. Make sure that  you add it atleast to the top and bottom of your message.</p>

<p>A recent survey by Experian discovered that when marketing emails also  included a coupon there was a higher transaction-to-click rate than  those without. The results were the same whether the full list received  the email or if only a segmented group received it.</p>
<p>Before we get ahead of ourselves, it&#8217;s important for all small local  businesses to understand the importance of having an auto-responder and  some type of opt-in subscription form on their website. Once in place,  business can be more efficient and effective with sending marketing  emails.</p>
<p>With most consumers now thinking of ways to save money, businesses need  to be keenly aware of the importance of offering deals. Those that  understand this and meet those demands will be more successful than  those businesses that underestimate the importance of doing so.</p>
<p>In fact, Experian has also found that 66 percent of United States  households now use coupons. It&#8217;s important for businesses to send out   coupons via email because there&#8217;s an increase of nearly 50 percent of  people using coupons from that source since 2007.</p>
<p>The value of email coupons is that they increase interaction or  participation of the readers and can be seen in these statistics:  marketing emails including coupons are opened approximately 25 percent  of the time compared to only about 17 percent if they don&#8217;t include  them. When coupons were redeemed online, there was a 17 percent higher  click-through rate.</p>
<p>There are some best practices that local businesses should consider when  planning an email marketing campaign that includes coupons:</p>
<p>- Make sure the offers you send out match the type of list you&#8217;re targeting.</p>
<p>- To find out what gives you the highest return, test your coupon amount and frequency.</p>
<p>- To make your coupon recipient feel special, use the words &#8220;exclusive&#8221; or &#8220;selected&#8221; on the coupon.</p>
<p>- To create an urgency for people to &#8220;react now&#8221;, it&#8217;s best to mention a time frame or a specific date for it to be used.</p>
<p>- To help get rid of unwanted inventory, time your coupons to your  business cycles by offering deep discounts on products nearing a  season&#8217;s end.</p>
<p>- Add a link to the email that gives the recipient the opportunity to &#8220;share with a friend&#8221; or &#8220;tell your group&#8221;, etc.</p>
<p>Coupons can be a real win-win for everyone. Customers get the deal  they&#8217;re looking for and you get extra sales while clearing out  inventory, and a chance to promote your local business information.</p>

They expect to be kept posted on what they  are interested in and whats new in the market or field they have chosen.</p>
<p>Businesses  would be so lucky to have these kinds of customers, the basic element  needed to get these type of people is, trust. When your customers trust  you, they will reward you with their loyalty. Many internet users have  gone to great lengths in protecting their email accounts from spam mail.  Some free-mail internet providers and internet service providers offer  spam protection while there are also some internet based companies that  screen your mails for you.</p>
<p>With an opt in subscriber mail list,  the email you send containing your promotional materials such as  newsletters, catalogs and marketing media will go through. Your intended  recipient will be able to read and view what you have sent, making it a  successful transfer of information. To be able to be allowed to do so,  you will need permission from your recipient, to get this permission;  you need to be able to get their trust. With the great lack of disregard  for privacy in the internet, getting the trust of an internet user, you  do not personally know is a big achievement.</p>

<p>Be true to your  customers, if you want to hype up your products and services, provide  guarantees. The more satisfied customers you get, the bigger probability  there is, that they will recommend you. Generally, people will trust  someone they know, when that someone recommends you, then you&#8217;re a  shoo-in. <p>I have a serious matter to discuss with you today if you are using or intend to use email marketing in your business. The CAN-SPAM Act, a law that sets the rules for commercial email, can cause major headaches for you if you fail to maintain strict compliance with the rules and regs this law sets forth. (Think &#8220;stabbed-in-the-eyeball-with-acid-dipped-scissors&#8221; kind of headaches.)</p>
<p>The CAN-SPAM Act establishes specific requirements for commercial messages, gives your email recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tough penalties you say? How tough?&#8221; How&#8217;s about up to $16,000.00 per email &#8211; is that deterrent enough for you? How about some jail time to go with it?</p>
<p>Imagine this scenario: You have started an email marketing business and done fairly well over the past couple of years. You&#8217;ve launched several new product campaigns, sold thousands of units, and built up quite a sizeable list of customers and prospects in your email marketing base. Then one day, someone to whom you&#8217;ve sent an email gets upset with you for whatever reason, maybe they got a damaged product or couldn&#8217;t get a human to answer your support line or they got fired from their day job and suddenly anyone who appears slightly successful (you) is a target of their ire. They pick up the phone and dial up the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s SPAM hotline or fire off a complaint letter about your &#8220;barrage of emails&#8221;, and presto &#8211; you and your company are the subjects of a full-blown FTC investigation and/or prosecution.</p>
<p>&#8220;How can I avoid this?&#8221; Well, by making sure you&#8217;re in compliance with the SPAM laws. Here&#8217;s a quick list of the most relevant ones:</p>
<p>1. You can&#8217;t use false or misleading header information. Your  From,  To,  Reply-To, and routing information, including your domain name and email address, must be accurate and identify you or your business as the one who initiated the message.</p>
<p>2. Don&#8217;t use deceptive subject lines. The subject line must accurately reflect the content of the message.</p>
<p>3. Identify the message as an email marketing ad. The law gives you a lot of leeway in how to do this, but you must disclose that you&#8217;re trying to sell something.</p>
<p>4.Tell recipients where you&#8217;re located. Your message must include your valid physical mailing address; it can be a PO box or a street address.</p>
<p>5. Here&#8217;s a biggie: Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email marketing offers from you. Your message must include a clear explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future. Craft the notice in a way that&#8217;s easy for an ordinary person to recognize, read, and understand. Then, you must honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. Once people have told you they don&#8217;t want to receive more messages from you, you can&#8217;t sell or transfer their email addresses, even in the form of a mailing list.</p>
<p>6. Monitor what others are doing on your behalf. The law makes clear that even if you hire another company to handle your email marketing, you can&#8217;t contract away your legal responsibility to comply with the law. Both your company and the company that actually sends the message may be held legally responsible.</p>

<p>It is common for the seasoned email marketing strategist to  notice a pattern of repetitive, typical and established email marketing  strategies in the marketplace. There is notable emphasis on the email  &#8220;holy trinity&#8221; &#8211; &#8221; subject lines,&#8221; &#8220;creatives&#8221; and &#8220;images&#8221; &#8211; as if all  email marketing only needed these three elements.</p>
<p>So after years of testing &#8220;subject lines,&#8221; &#8220;creatives&#8221; and &#8220;images&#8221; to  get better &#8220;subject lines,&#8221; &#8220;creatives&#8221; and &#8220;images&#8221; email conversion  rates are still dropping. What is the email marketer to do next?</p>
<p>If you, just like me at times, find yourself in this predicament, you  may be what I call the &#8220;bored email marketer.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here are three techniques that boost creativity and help to break away  from email marketing boredom:</p>
<p>1. Focus on concepts first not creatives and images.</p>
<p>According to a Merkle Interactive Services 2009 study 52% of email  recipients have images turned off in their email reader (via  <a href="http://emailstatscenter.com"  title="http://emailstatscenter.com" class="autohyperlink" target="_blank">emailstatscenter.com</a>). So more than half of your customers will not see  that carefully crafted email creative first. They will see your headline  and the first few links you have most prominently placed.</p>
<p>So make a decision to not put creative first this year and focus on  developing meaningful concepts that resonate with your target audience.</p>
<p>Take a good look at your goals and work back from them to map the path  that will get you there. The first step in the chain that will lead to  your goal is understanding the multiple &#8221; personas &#8221; that make up your  audience. Based on those &#8220;personas&#8221; develop multiple concepts to test.  Develop content to illustrate the concepts and then develop the  creatives. So if you follow the analytics/ hypotheses/ test -planning/  content/ creative/ execution/ post-campaign analysis cycle, there are  four other email strategy components to keep the email marketer from  getting bored.</p>
<p>2. When you run out of concepts to test, retest concepts from a year  ago.</p>
<p>A few years back, before Al Gore&#8217;s &#8220;fight for green&#8221; became mainstream, I  developed a campaign to test if &#8220;going green&#8221; was a stronger driver for  web usage than &#8220;de-clutter your life.&#8221; &#8220;Going green&#8221; failed the test. A  year later, after Gore won the Nobel Peace prize and his global warming  message became popular, we re-tested the same two concepts against each  other and this time &#8220;going green&#8221; won.</p>
<p>What we learned here is that trends can change very fast, and we have to  change with them, even if it means going back to an old concept. It may  be old to the email marketer, but new to our customers.</p>
<p>3. Do the exact opposite of what you have been doing.</p>
<p>When you cannot move the needle enough with new tests it may be time to  mix in something which is the complete opposite of what you have been  doing so far. If you unsuccessfully tested images, throw in a no-image  market-cell. If most of your emails have been short, try testing against  a long email. If your communication language has been formal, test  against informal copy.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not advising here doing away with tactics that have been  consistently proven, nor am I advising throwing away common sense. What  I&#8217;m advocating is challenging ourselves to break away from patters that  keep us stuck in an unproductive comfort zone.</p>
<p>Doing the opposite of what you have been doing may not prove the success  you were looking for each time, but it will open up new perspectives,  trigger new ideas, freshen up your strategy and keep you from becoming  the bored email marketer.</p>
