by Suzannah Tho-mas

In the ever growing world of technology and internet marketing demands today, most corporate giants and small business turn to the social media avenues to boost brand identity. Social media marketing avenues not only boost your Brand identity but if these environments are researched well enough most lay people not involved in corporate or actual business marketing industries can market their business very effectively through social media venues.

These tends to be the actual circumstance, between companies globally marketing and search engine optimizing their wares and services across the social media giants and the average age specific, gender specific web surfers monopolizing these social media environments you often come across a message displayed as ‘OVER CAPACITY” or Technical Problem please try again later.

Are these Social Media Giants running out of space or not providing adequate hosting with the appropriate connection ability? Most of these Social media giants perhaps may view those issues as slight, but when the average corporate or general market is attempting to access their account regardless if it is for marketing purpose or for entertainment or simply to communicate with family and friends and cannot due to an “over capacity” message, they will start looking else ware for environments that can accommodate.

Twitter.com in my opinion is affected more so by these issues from actual investigation on part than the other big three social media environments of facebook.com, myspace.com and LinkedIn.com and YouTube.com.

Facebook. Boast a 350 million user-plus site is the Mecca in social media today and is growing at significant speed.

YouTube. YouTube has hundreds of millions of views and users daily, YouTube is quickly becoming a mainstream marketing tool utilized by small and large business more than ever.

Mass marketing, entertainment or simply for the pleasure of swapping a tweet or a shout out to possible leads, friend, family or work associates if definitely having a Huge affect on one’s ability to simply connect.

What does that mean or tell us? That there is definitely more room for New Social Media avenues out there in today’s market and if managed, marketed and opened on a global basis, it certainly leaves room for newer, simpler and more advanced social media avenues to pick up a significant amount of members in the corporate arena, business arena and general public environments that would be more than ready to jump ship for an environment that accommodate the basic need of simply signing on, marketing a brand or sending a message to family and friends.

These top social media sites are definitely important to social media marketing strategies and on some of them it may seem overwhelming to get a system in place that produces real results and allows you the simple ability to just get connected to promote your brand. But once you do, it will be well worth your efforts. Facebook. Boast a 350 million user-plus site is the Mecca in social media today and is growing at significant speed.

Facebook is the No. 2 website in America, according to Alexa.com, and its fastest-growing demographic is people over age 35 and older.

YouTube has hundreds of millions of views and users daily, YouTube is quickly becoming a mainstream marketing tool utilized by small and large business more than ever.Video is one of the hottest items on the market, and YouTube delivers exactly what more than 60 percent of internet users are looking for.

LinkedIn. This is the place where 51 million and growing daily business owners network to find leads and joint venture ability. It’s a fast growing monster environment that caters to the corporate world and is gaining in size and strength in the social media world today.

Twitter allows 140-character posts along with tagged trending topics It has had a phenomenal growth rate in the past year.

Google Buzz is Google’s latest entry into social networking has the potential to attract rapid adoption, due to its connection with the widely used Gmail and Google Maps applications. The Buzz allows users to post status updates and upload pictures and videos to a Google profile, not unlike Facebook and Twitter. A user’s network is formed by contacts they interact with frequently on Gmail. Gmail now offers Business mail to promote their efforts even further.

If a user makes an update public, the information also gets added to the “Buzz” layer now available on Google mobile maps. Now, Google Maps users on i-Phones and Android devices can view the things other Buzz users have said about businesses in the area.

Are you getting the same message when trying to connect “Over Capacity”? I would like to hear from you!

Forum Marketing is one of the most powerful way to market your business or website on the internet when it is done correctly, this article will show you the fundamental rules for using forum marketing to promote your business.

The first thing you need to understand is that forums are designed to allow people to ask questions for experts to find answers to, not for the purpose of selling products or services. The idea is to become involved in a discussion in which answer people’s questions. You can post your ideas or opinions on a particular topic, question or statement, or you can start your own thread if the topic is not already being discussed. So now you can see the benefit of forums to other people looking for information, but what about the benefits to you and your business? Well, when you join a forum, you will set up your profile with a signature that will appear at the bottom of each of your posts. The only place you should be marketing your website links is the signature box That link becomes what is called a backlink because it links back to your site. If you make lots of forum posts to lots of different forums, your website will rank higher than one that has less backlinks. So now you know why forum marketing works, read on to find out how you should post the right way.

The best forums to post in are those relating to your topic but you can post in forums of different topics as long as your posts relate to that particular topic. Eg: you shouldn’t post about your MLM in a gardening forum. Also, stay on topic with the thread you are posting on. It is easy to go off in a tangent when the thread is very long, read through the posts that are already there, see if you can add helpful information to the thread.

If you are thinking about spamming the forum, don’t do it. If all you are posting is sales pitches and links to your page, it won’t be long before the administrator catches up with you and boots you out. They don’t want spam on their site, they want valuable information and answers to the questions people ask. The only place you should be posting your links and pitching your business is the signature box. You will be able to set this up in your profile and it will automatically be entered under your text every time you post something to the forum. If your link is quite long such as affiliate links, it is a good idea to mask the html by hyperlinking a sentence instead of displaying the entire link. You can find information about how to do this on each forum.

Some forums allow you to post links and other html if it is directly relevant to the topic and provides valuable information to readers. You should check the forum rules and guidelines before you post. That way you will not breach any rules that may get you blacklisted from the forum.

So now that you know the basics, get started today, the more posts you make in the more forums, the more backlinks you can get for your website.

The internet and social media has redefined the way we connect, act and react. Our social capital is not a function of our online and offline networks. With online social media one can now connect with millions of people across the globe which was never possible earlier. Every individual can now have powerful and interesting social media presence.

That being said, not all can become powerful on social media. One needs to consistently work on building his social capital, understand people and build his network. One may also look at connecting with highly influential people in the social media space and with them as connectors, build his own network.
Different social media platforms act differently as well. While it may take less than a minute to connect to someone on twitter, LinkedIN does require a formal introduction via your existing contact to connect.

Once your network grows, your reputation, social capital and influence over others multiply. Just imagine, if you have a six figure friend list in twitter – how many people would be interested in following you. How influential you’d be in the social media space. Although not all connections are equal, all of them do add value to your network. You may not connect in the same way with your twitter friend as you do with your family – but how many success stories do we hear originating from twitter daily?

Sane business marketers have already realized the power of social media in building their networks. They do know that the benefits will not be near term – however, are we so short sighted that we cannot see what the world will be and how will we interact over the years to come?

Building networks has never been so rewarding and easy. However, building a reputation would require consistent efforts where your social friends respect you and come to you when they need help.

Happy networking !

There are dozens of sites and services set-up to help you promote events such as webinars, seminar, workshops, grand openings and product launches. While these tools are indeed online you can get benefit employing them for local offline events as well.

Use MeetUp and create a group surrounding your event – this might turn into something very valuable to do on an ongoing basis and create a nice way for you to build a local community.

Publish your event to some of the bigger online events calendars such as Yahoo’s Upcoming or Eventful. These sites have geography built in and help promote events that are near users.

Create multiple Facebook pages or twitter accounts just for the event and post relevant information by building local followings through twitter search and Facebook Groups.

Do a series of interviews with participants in the event or to tease out bits of content that will be presented. Record these interviews as post casts and post them on your event pages, submit to iTunes and offer them to others to run on their sites. Just make sure it’s great content.

Upload transcripts from the interviews or slides you intend to present to sites such as DocStoc, Scribd, and Slideshare.

Include quick videos and photos of before, during and after the event and host on YouTube and Flickr for added exposure.

Submit press releases before, during and after the event to sites such as PR Web and PitchEngine.

Cross post as much information from all of this activity to all of your social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and twitter as all allow links to videos, audios and photos.

The short-term impact of working a system like this to promote an event or launch is greater exposure and hopefully greater participation, but the long term impact for future events may be the real payoff. As you get better at this kind of social media routine, you’ll find momentum building through search engine traffic too.

A lot of people are confused by the term social media marketing and believe that it is only advertising on a social networking site, where networks monitor what users are doing and place ads next to them, hoping they will get a click. However, social media marketing is actually about different kinds of collaborations between people and finding ways that individual fans of a particular brand product or even a company can endorse it themselves on various social media sites like MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and others.

Social media marketing differs from industrial media marketing in that industrial media generally uses very expensive tools requiring a great deal of financial capital to publish its information, where as social media marketing uses fairly inexpensive tools that enables anyone anywhere to publish or access information. Both social media and industrial media have the capability to reach a small audience of one or two, or large audiences of millions. However, the time lag is generally much longer between a communications from industrial media as compared to social media when responses can be instantaneous. In addition, there are currently few, if any, limitations on social media such as on pages or hours. The audiences are encouraged to be active participants, to add comments, or blog or even edit articles or stories, as they deem necessary.

Social media optimization, or SMO, uses methods that generate publicity through social media and online community websites. There are many different types of technologies and applications for social media like blogs, vlogs, wikis, emails, podcasts, instant messaging and many more. Two of the most popular reference services are Google and Wikipedia. You can share photos at Flickr, videos at YouTube, personal music at Last.fm, microblog on Jaiku and Twitter. Besides the now universally known Facebook and MySpace, you can also go social networking on Avatars United, Youmeo and Second Life (social network via virtual reality).

Experts insist that social media is here to stay. Companies are now recognizing the need to be more involved in social media marketing, because it is through these channels that they can hear most quickly and honestly what consumers need and want. Businesses are learning that they now no longer wield absolute control over the behavior and buying decisions of their consumers. By paying attention, for instance, to a pro or anti product blog from a consumer, marketers have access to open customer discussions they never had before and then, in turn, open their own dialogue to be able to drive the needed change quickly.

Social media marketing opens up a world of fast flowing creative experimentation where an idea can be tested online in the morning and by afternoon there is a response. Social media techniques should be combined into the marketing mix to optimize the places where the impact can be maximized. The key element in successful social media marketing is to be swift but make sure to drive change in proactive way rather than being reactive.

It is well known that Facebook is the second most trafficked site in the world. So that means you can have an inexhaustible amount of leads.

Yes there is a lot of opportunity but how will I attract leads for my business? I am going to give you some basic Facebook marketing methods that work wonders for lead generation.

#1 One of the first mistakes made by new on line marketers is blasting their opportunity to every new person they meet on Facebook. Newbies tend to blast their website and opportunity to any new friend they add to their list. Spamming your opportunity will usually turn most people away.

When I am sent a friend request with a message telling me about their awesome opportunity, I always ignore the request. I am a marketer myself and I do not like to be sold. Many Facebook people are of the same mind set about spamming. Facebook is a social networking site, so why don’t we socialize, develop relationships, get to know each other and build trust. When you have developed trust then the opportunity to present your business will appear. Every person I have developed a relationship with on Facebook has always eventually asked, “What do you do?” That is when I begin talking about my business. It works every time. I’m willing to bet that your up line would be appalled if you told them they shouldn’t blast the business to every contact on the net. I’m sure you were told to talk to everyone about your awesome product and opportunity. When you market off line that technique may work for you but it will not work on Facebook.

#2 Bring value to the on line community. Posting informative material or your favorite quotes will work much better than blasting your business proposition 20 times a day. Create some content that will help others build their on line business. You will then to look like a leader and not look like a spammer. I’m talking from experience. It didn’t take me long to learn I wasn’t getting any results by posting my business opportunity 20 times a day. I then learned what Attraction Marketing was all about. Attraction Marketing taught me that I had to give value to others and then they would listen to what I had to say. After I developed trust with a person then I could present my opportunity. Traditional marketing doesn’t work very well in the social web 2.0 era.

#3 Target your prospects. To build your business using social sites you should go after other mlm people. Are you asking why you should go after other mlm people? We all know that this is a tough business and that 97% will quit within the first year. This is where your value, as a leader, will work in your favor. What if you were to show one of these people how to acquire some leads. You have given them more than their up line ever did. When you help someone acquire some leads for their business they will see you as someone to follow. When you show someone how to get what they want, guess who their new leader will be? YOU! This means the more value you provide them the more they see you as a leader and will do whatever you want them to do. Primarily join YOUR opportunity!

#4 Join groups. Look for groups that are formed for network marketing. You can find these groups by using the search function on Facebook. Search for mlm companies by name. Once you find the group you want to connect with, hit the “See all members” button. A window will open and you will see all the members in that group. Click the “Add as a friend” link and another window will open. In the new window you will see a “Send a personal message” link. Click the link and a message box will open. Write a note then click the send message link. I always get a better response rate when I send a short note. Check out their profile before you send the message. Find something in the profile to complement them on. You don’t have to send an essay. Just something short like, “I see your involved with company xyz. What a great company. Want to connect, and share ideas on how to build our business?” Never present your opportunity in the friend request. I try to connect with 50 people a day using this method. You have just discovered a 4 step program that has brought me daily leads from Facebook.

Take these techniques and use them to help build your business on line.

Photo by lirontockerBuilding branded profiles, engaging prospects and connecting with potential employees and strategic partners are all powerful ways to tap into Facebook and LinkedIn.

But, for the typical small business, there may actually be some equally important social networks you may not be so familiar with. The big networks get all the press, but small networks, say for instance, like the connectodex found here at OpenForum may prove tremendously valuable for small business folks due to the small size and targeted focus of the membership.

The list below represents some of the more active networks I’ve encountered when it come to small business social networking.

Visit a handful of these sites and choose several that feel right for your business. Once you build a profile, taking full advantage of the opportunity to link to your primary business offer full descriptions of your products and services, spend enough time to go a bit deeper.

Write or republish some articles or blog content, search and identify a dozen or so people to connect with, and give some advice, point to someone’s great content or answer questions from other members.

Don’t try to jump into every new network you can find, but do jump into a few outside of Facebook and LinkedIn and make yourself a bit of a larger fish in these smaller ponds.

In addition to OpenForum check these networks out:

Look beyond traffic and links and you will find the real value.

Social media, and by that I’m lumping together blogs, RSS, social networking and social book marking sites, presents the marketer with a rich set of new tools to help in the effort to generate new business.

But, if that’s the only way you view social media, as a set of tools to perform a set of tactics to reach the set of objectives you have always tried to reach with your marketing, then not only are you really missing the opportunity, you will probably find yourself wondering what all the fuss is about.

You can’t approach new media with old thinking. Taking full advantage of social media requires understanding and adopting a specific social media strategy.

First and foremost you must appreciate the differences between social media and, say, direct mail. With direct mail the outcome is likely, to create an action. With most social media, it’s to create a connection. Both of these have equally important places in the long-term health of a business, but how they happen is significantly different.

Try to do one with the other and the results may actually backfire – ie: Ads on Facebook? There are definitely instances in which a social media play can align with an organization’s industry focus and become natural facilitators of lead acquisition.

I think the best way to look at social media, though, is to view it as a way to open up access points. These points can then be leveraged to create content, connection, and community. Do that well, and they can also add to lead generation, nurturing and conversion. Think of your web site as the ultimate destination or bucket to catch what comes through your social media access points.

Blogging – If content is one of the golden measures, blogs are a given. This one has become so mainstream it’s hard to think of in the same light as say Facebook. Blogging enhances all forms of content creation, drives search traffic and enables the start of connection and community in the form of comments and conversation. Employing this tool effectively feels a bit like social media 101 – a required course of action before advancing.

In Action: A blog connected to or functioning as your website, a blog network for your customers, a blog network for your strategic partners, an idea blog for your industry.

Tools – Typepad, WordPress, WordPress MU, MovableType, Drupal, Square Space, Twitter

RSS – Perhaps best known as a subset of blogging, RSS is what drives the spreading, filtering and aggregating of ideas and content. RSS technology has the ability to make content more useful.

In Action: Simply researching through news, republishing news and search results, reformatting information – data and calendars, creating custom news feeds, mashing lots of feeds into one.

Tools – bloglines.com, Google Reader, GoogleNews, YahooNews, aideRSS, mySyndicaat, Feedburner

Social Bookmarking and News – Social news and book mark sites live to promote ideas and reward the creators of those ideas for creativity and consistency. The best social news plays consist of targeted campaigns focused at a specific site or audience.

Getting on page one of Digg or del.icio.us or creating this week’s viral hit on You Tube can send your site’s traffic through the roof, but there a couple things to consider.

These are communities that reward participation and hard work (that’s not to say people haven’t figured out ways to beat the system, but go in realize that methodical work is ahead.)

Choose a community with the proper focus. Digg is technology heavy, Small Business Brief is for small business

Tools: Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, YouTube, Google Video, Mixx, Small Business Brief

Best Practices: Build deep once, Study and read, Find and pitch influencers, Make it easy for you and your readers, Build networks, Promote your chosen site.

Social Networking – The recent rise in popularity of sites like MySpace and Facebook clearly points to the desire for community. As marketers rush to these sites it becomes clear that virtual “no soliciting” signs are hung out.

Networks are networks and while the meeting place may be new, the rules (manners) are the same. If you goal is to establish yourself as an influencer of an existing network, you must be prepared to earn the right, mostly by giving, helping, guiding and building relationships without overt efforts to cash in.

The long term can be very fruitful, with patience you can make connections, improve your visibility and increase sales.

Tools: ecademy, Facebook, mySpace, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Jigsaw, Ryze

Best Practices: Participate actively, Pitch influencers, Make it easy for yourself and your network, Find connections

Building Your Own Social Network – The next wave in community building is the personalized, niche, hand-build community. There are some emerging tools that make this idea much more doable, but creating your own community is a serious investment in terms of time and resources. Done well it can be the ultimate in terms of building a brand.

Tools: Drupal, Ning, KickApps, OneSite

Social media is one of the buzz words that technologically minded people keep throwing around. You may also have heard of social marketing, social networking and web 2.0; broadly though, they all come under the highly generalised social media umbrella. It’s a phenomenon that has its roots right back at the dawn of the Internet and online communications. But social media has come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of years, becoming one of the most popular and widely used methods of interaction.

First of all it was MySpace. They took off with a bang after a number of mediocre successes from the likes of Friendster. With the ability to upload images, movies and interact within a community, MySpace tapped into a whole new resource. However, in recent years, it has had its power usurped by upstarts such as Twitter and of course Facebook; bringing extra diversity and improved competition.

Today though, the power of social media has never been greater. Its potential to reach out and communicate with a diverse audience has been quickly identified by businesses and marketers throughout the world. But with something as powerful and largely unmediated as web 2.0, there are dangers as well as positives.

When used properly and to its optimal effect, there’s no doubting that social media, whether using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or any of the other multimedia formats, can provide unprecedented free marketing. But herein lies one of the many pitfalls of using such a diverse source. Users have become immune to, and worse still, are finding themselves turning against spammers.

A spammer is essentially someone who offers nothing except flagrant self-promotion. They’ll use whatever resource is available to them to provide links and tell the world how good they are. This excessive exposure does little to offer potential customers anything in the way of confidence.

The key to social media is in its title, it’s all about social interaction. Twitter isn’t a pathway to guaranteed untold riches. If you are to become successful on any social site, you need to earn the trust of the community and offer a relevant service. Just as a business might offer fantastic customer service that can soon be ruined by poor front of house salesmanship; the same ideology should also be applied to their online ventures.

As with anything in business you don’t get something for nothing. You have to work on your social media presence and become an expert in your field. Interact with the community, answer questions promptly and reliably whilst also getting across that strong message which will drive customers to your site – after all, that is still your primary objective lest we forget.

There is an opinion amongst some that social media is to be feared. Yes it can be used negatively, disgruntled employees may revolt and unhappy customers might put the boot in; but if you’re confident in your company and the product that you offer, then you shouldn’t have any concerns whatsoever. There are professional agencies available who can handle your accounts, if of course you can’t do it in house. This will provide you with the expert service without any of the fuss.

It is one of the most popular and cost-effective resources available today. Allowing your business to sidetrack it completely could well be a huge mistake. There are no guarantees of success, but if you’re struggling (or even if you’re not) to reach out to your customers; social media could well be the solution for you.

Social networking is more than just a craze; it’s revolutionizing the way businesses market to the whole world. Social networks have been around for several years now, but many people are still just getting started as they realize the potential. Social networking can increase your traffic and revenue more than you can imagine.

Most online social networking efforts are free, and it takes very little effort to get some payoff with social networking. When you are consistent with your efforts it can go a long way to driving traffic to your website, increasing your exposure and establishing yourself as an expert in your field of business.

1. Use your blog as a form of communication.

Use your blog as a way for your potential customers to know you. A blog is a great way to express yourself and show off your quality. You want your readers to feel like you are talking to them as a friend, but I would recommend not getting too personal. The nice thing about blogs is that you can receive feedback on your content via comments. You can also use the blog to ask questions to your readers or hold contests. Your readers can enter the contest or respond to your questions via the comment section. I recommend keeping a dialogue going through your own comments, too. This helps to establish an environment where people know they can receive answers to their problems, as well as read fresh content.

2. Use other people’s blogs to establish yourself as an expert.

Reading and commenting on blogs within your own niche or close to your niche can help you to establish yourself as an expert. You can offer your own opinions or angles to the entries being posted. When appropriate, you can even offer links to your own blog entries or articles to offer as additional information to the readers and in turn supplies additional exposure to your website.

3. Connect with people in Facebook.

Facebook is fast becoming a great way for people to connect socially and professionally. Some people have a problem combining their personal life with their social life, so this may not be an appropriate option for you. Facebook offers your customers a way to really engage with you and learn to trust you. Meeting people and making purchases through the internet can be risky, so there is a level of trust that needs to be established before people are comfortable buying from you.

4. Leverage groups in Facebook or LinkedIn.

Facebook also has a great community of groups that you can join. It is also free to create your own group to get some communication going amongst your own customers. LinkedIn has a similar feature. I think that for certain fields LinkedIn can be a more appropriate venue than Facebook and vice versa for other fields. You need to learn which option is better for your field. Try to find where your customers are hanging out.

5. Join the twitter community to build a list of followers.

Twitter is on a rampage. More and more entrepreneurs are tapping into the marketing power of twitter. Twitter is a place where you must communicate your thoughts in 140 characters or less. You can connect with people by “following” them. Anyone can follow you unless you block them. It is a very quick way to compile a large following. Most people post links to their blog entries, or links to their articles, or links to anything that you feel would help your customers get to know you better while learning something useful for themselves.

6. Turn your blog entries into podcasts and submit to iTunes.

Learn to leverage your efforts by turning blog entries and articles into mp3 audios. Posting them to a site like iTunes can increase your exposure to that same content. Some people learn by reading and others need to hear it. Now you can tap into both types of learners. Your listeners will even have the option of downloading your mp3 files to their ipod to listen at their convenience or to even send to their friends.

7. Turn your articles into videos and post on YouTube.

Like with audio, you can also use your articles and website content to create videos to post on YouTube. YouTube is just another way of reaching out to more people.

Social networking can be time-consuming, so it is a good idea to choose which venues are more important for your customers, and to choose which options work with your personality. If you get stage fright, then videos might not be for you. If you love to chat, then Facebook or Twitter might be perfect for you. Just remember that when you are out there communicating that your main purpose is to sell and run a business. It is easy to get carried away and spend too much time commenting and chatting that you forget to focus on your business. Not only can social networks bring you closer to your customers and offer them a way to learn to trust you, but it can be fun, too!
